Mike Scholes became severely sight impaired in November 2007. As a hot air balloon pilot and owner of the Sussex based passenger balloon company, Chad Ballooning, his life changed dramatically when he was no longer able to fly solo.

He was recommended to contact St Dunstan’s, the charity that gives training and support to blind and partially sighted ex-service men and women. “They were amazing, ” Mike says. ” I never thought I would be able to go skiing again but I’ve been skiing, kayaking and canoeing thanks to the confidence building training and support of St D’s. Now I would like people to know more about the terrific service they offer”.

The demand on St Dunstan’s to help service personnel has increased because of recent conflicts and as it relies heavily on donations, Mike would like to raise as much money as possible by trekking the last degree of latitude to the North Pole in April 2010. He will be pulling a sledge with his equipment and food over extremely rugged terrain in very cold temperatures.

Mike hopes to fly a small balloon at the Pole to show that with the right support and encouragement anything is possible.
